Soccer Mom

A suburban mother’s role is to deliver children obstetrically once, and by car forever after. ~Peter De Vries

Ever since my first child was born, I have been a “soccer mom-in-training.” I was carting my son off to Gymboree as soon as he could sit up on his own.

This past year, I made the official the “soccer mom” title. My son started his first soccer team, called the Firebolts. He hated the name, but loved soccer, even though he rarely kicked the ball, and never once scored a goal. It was wonderful.

Unlike many parents, I’m not going overboard with scheduled activities for my kids. They each get one activity and we go to library storytimes. Soccer for my son, dance for my daughter. That’s it. I want to leave time for my kids to be kids. I want them to play outside, and learn to enjoy the simple things in life.
