Picture Book Recommendation: BABY BEAR EATS THE NIGHT

Cover of Baby Bear Eats the NightBaby Bear Eats the Night is an imaginative story written by one of my critique partners, Anthony Pearson.

“Mama Bear put Baby Bear down to sleep. Their cave was warm and Baby Bear’s bed was soft. Baby Bear should’ve gone right to sleep, but he couldn’t…”

Baby Bear is afraid of the dark. But, rather than letting his fears eat away at him, Baby Bear decides to eat his fears. (Sorry, I had to…)

Unfortunately, other animals take issue with Baby Bear eating the night. They need the night to survive. How will they save the night now that Baby Bear has gobbled it all up? Hmm…

The illustrations  by Bonnie Leick are whimsical. Along with the text, the illustrations give the story a bit of a folktale vibe that I haven’t seen much in recent children’s books. Here’s another sample of the text:

“Baby Bear climbed the tallest tree he could find. With a swift stroke of his claws, he cut a line into the sky. A flap of night waved in the breeze.”

In addition to being a perfect bedtime story, Baby Bear Eats the Night can help introduce nocturnal wildlife to children, and teach them a little about nature without getting didactic. Also, the story will help children realize that maybe the night isn’t so scary after all. And the ending’s fun. Which you won’t find out unless you read it, so go to your local library, bookstore, or even just download the Kindle version today.

The Activity Idea Place has several great rhymes and activities suitable for a preschool storytime on teddy bears.

Gummy Lump Toys Blog has a paper-plate bear project that is absolutely adorable.

For those children who are still afraid of the night even after reading this story, Think Crafts Blog shows you how to make Night Light Lanterns.

And, ok, this isn’t really for kids but this project from hannicraft was so cute I had to include it: Crocheted Bear Girl Hat.
